What are the Four Pillars?
Both allopathic and holistic approaches to Osteopathy are guided by four principles:
-
The body is a unit. This means as practitioners we must see the whole body as one system working together and that no one part is independent of another.
-
Structure and function are interdependent and interrelated. This means that the body is structured specifically so it can perform its necessary functions. Whether it be folds in the intestines to increase surface area for nutrient absorption, or a prominence on a bone to serve as an attachment point for a muscle tendon, everything serves a purpose.
-
The body has self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms. This means that the body is designed to control and heal itself. The way a wound seals and repairs itself, or inflammation brings healing factors to damaged tissue, or white blood cells fight off a cold, our bodies are naturally capable of healing.
-
Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the previous three principles. This means that as practitioners we treat the body with an understanding that it works as a whole and must be considered as such. Should the structure of the body deviate from normal, we can expect its function to be affected. If the structure is returned to normal, then the body's ability to self-heal and self-regulate will also be returned.
